FAQs

Question:
Can I stack things in the furnace room?
Answer:
It is against code for other items to be in the furnace room. If you have to keep things in this room-- and we advise you not to--you must keep them away from the heating system.

Information

Many factors can affect the balance of room-to-room temperatures throughout your home, causing uneven heating. Some companies opt to install low-cost systems rather than designing ductwork to even out temperatures. There are a few things you can do to help solve this problem:

Damper Registers

In the heating mode your system can be adjusted to push more air to different areas of your home.  As you damper down registers, this builds up pressure to even out the distribution.  Make sure you have the right registers--registers that force the air up will give you better room circulation and will do a better job in balancing the temperature.  Each register can be opened or closed more to balance the inequality.  Up to 50% of register in the heating mode can be shut off totally. Cooling mode only 10% can be closed

Let Rentmeister’s evaluate your system and make sure that it’s working efficiently for you.

Potential Problems

An undersized furnace:
There are cases where the furnace was sized incorrectly for your home, but more often, it’s just that the furnace needs maintenance.  When the filter, blower wheel or evaporative coil is dirty, it affects the airflow and lowers the blower capacity, also lowering your circulation while increasing your power and gas bills.

Register Differences:
Wood registers are too restrictive for running a good heating and air conditioning system. They do look nice in your home but are not functional.

There is a difference in metal registers. Make sure that fins are turned up and not at a 45° angle. This forces your air toward the ceiling and gives you better indoor air quality.

Register Deflectors:
Many home improvement stores sell deflectors for registers.  Most of the time these seem to be a hindrance rather than a help to your heating and air conditioning system.

Sizing Furnaces:
Furnaces in the past have usually been oversized rather than undersized.  Keep in mind that a furnace is rated in input and you need to adjust for altitude and efficiency.  Each furnace is different on the adjustment calculations used.

Filters:
There are many filters available and each has a different affect on your system. To find out more about filters Click here.
