Maintain Your Air Conditioner to Prevent Breakdowns This Summer

It’s safe to say that summers in our area are no easy walk in the park. In fact you may just want to stay indoors for the rest of this month to be on the safe side! All kidding aside though, this hot weather can be more than uncomfortable—it can be unhealthy.

This is particularly true for elderly or ill individuals. As such, it’s absolutely vital that you have an effectively functioning air conditioning system and that if any AC emergencies crop up they be taken care of right away. So how can you best prevent AC breakdowns this season?

Routine Maintenance Is Essential

When is the last time you scheduled a professional to come out and tune-up your air conditioning system? If it’s been well over a year, then the time for you to schedule another appointment is right now. It’s during this visit that your HVAC professional will complete a full inspection of your cooling system and will conduct any cleaning that needs to be done. They’ll also make recommendations for repairs, which should be addressed as soon as possible.

Change Your Filter

There is one maintenance task that homeowners can and should do on their own: change their HVAC filter. This air filter, which comes standard with your cooling system, is designed to protect the inside components of that system. If it becomes clogged it can create obstructions for your airflow and disrupt other components of your HVAC system as well.

If you have excessive contaminants in your home such as pet dander or cigarette smoke, your filter should be changed monthly. Otherwise you may be able to get away with performing this task once every three months.

Keep Your Outdoor Unit Clear

Is there any debris in or around your air conditioner’s outdoor unit? Check for dirt, grass, shrubbery, mulch, etc. These items can easily restrict airflow and thus damage your system. While you are doing this, be sure to check that your indoor air handlers and/or vents are also clear of dirt and obstructions.
