Refrigerant and Its Role in Your Cooling System

refrigerant-role-cooling-systemWhat most homeowners don’t realize is that their cooling system’s refrigerant is one of the most important components there is to an air conditioner. Without the right amount of it, your AC system simply cannot do its job.

Therefore, it’s important that you understand the basics of how it works, and understand that if you are losing refrigerant, you have a leak—your system does not consume refrigerant like a car consumes gasoline. If you do have a refrigerant leak, then it’s time to invest in professional air conditioning services in Roy, UT.

More about Refrigerant

It’s easy to assume that refrigerant is a single liquid that exists within your cooling system. However, it’s actually a combination of different heat transfer fluids used in all central air conditioning and heat pump systems. This refrigerant runs between the two units of your cooling system: the inside unit and the outdoor unit.

Within your air conditioner is a component referred to as the evaporator coil. The function of the evaporator coil is as the name implies: it evaporates the refrigerant in order to absorb heat from the surrounding area. So, if you have a traditional central AC, this would be the heat in your home. If you’re utilizing a heat pump system, then the process can be reversed to pull heat from the outdoors in the winter time.

Following this part of the process, the refrigerant—in gas form—is sent down the refrigerant line to the other coil, the condenser coil, where it condenses back into a liquid, and heat is either released into or out of your home, helping your air conditioner or heat pump work effectively.

The Problem with Refrigerant Loss

As we mentioned above, if you are losing refrigerant, then it means you have a leak. It’s imperative that you have the source of the leak located and repaired so that your air conditioner doesn’t suffer. Without the right level of this fluid, your system won’t be able to perform efficiently, and eventually it will lead to a system breakdown if repairs are too delayed.
