Get Your Ducts Sealed This Fall to Improve Your Heating

There are still a couple of months to go until winter, but heating season is here now. That means that it’s a good idea to get your home’s heating situation fixed up now, before the really cold weather starts to hit. One of the best ways to ensure that your heating system is ready for winter is to have your ducts sealed this fall. Let’s take a look at what duct sealing is, and why it is necessary.

What Is Duct Sealing?

Duct sealing is the process of identifying and sealing leaks in the ductwork of a home. There are a couple of different ways to go about this, but the most common method is mastic. Mastic is a type of viscous material made from tree resin that is painted into the duct leak. Once it dries, the mastic is stiff enough to seal the leak but flexible enough to move with the duct without cracking. Duct tape is also used, though not the variety that you are probably familiar with. Regulation duct tape includes a metallic layer, making it better able to create a tight seal.

Why Duct Sealing Is Necessary

Ducts are very susceptible to developing leaks over time, even if they’re never subjected to anything more strenuous than normal use. Though individual duct leaks are small, they really add up over time. In fact, the US Department of Energy has found that duct leaks account for as much as 30% average loss of output for forced air systems. That’s almost a third of the total heating output that you pay for that is completely going to waste. This is why duct sealing is so important for making sure that your system operates properly and efficiently.
