Improve the Efficiency of Your Heater This Season!

couple in their home on a cold night wearing winter pajamasWith temperatures already cooling down around our parts, it’s only a matter of time before we all begin using our heating systems. And as hard as your air conditioners had to work to keep you comfortable this summer, it’s understandable that you would like to use your heater as efficiently as possible, to save energy and subsequently, money. Ensuring you are using your heater as effectively and efficiently as possible is as easy as following the tips below.

Schedule Routine Maintenance

A dirty or even aging heater means it likely has to overwork in order to maintain your desired temperature. You can pretty easily prevent your heater from getting unnecessarily dirty and help prevent small issues from turning into larger, more expensive ones, by scheduling routine maintenance. This is only one of the many Bountiful, UT heating services that we offer, and should be scheduled at least once a year—twice a year if you are utilizing a heat pump system for year-round comfort.

Utilize Your Programmable Thermostat

Hopefully, you are taking advantage of the benefits that a programmable thermostat has to offer. If you do have a programmable thermostat and nobody is home during the day, set the temperature a few degrees lower than you would normally. This is a great way to save energy and avoid heating your home to your desired temperature when nobody is even home to enjoy it.

Change Your Air Filter Regularly

Another easy way to improve your heater’s efficiency is by changing the air filter. Many homeowners assume this component is in place to protect your indoor air quality. But, it’s actually there to protect the inside components of your heating system. To avoid a clogged filter, change it at least every 3 months. Homes with significant contaminants such as pet dander or cigarette smoke should change theirs closer to once a month.

Consider a Heating System Replacement

Newer heaters are always improving in overall efficiency. If your system is 10–15 years old (although this will vary depending on the model you have) it’s just about time to consider a heating system replacement. Doing so will help you reap the benefits of energy savings throughout the heater’s lifespan.
