How to Prep Your Air Conditioner before Summer Comes

Were you aware that your heating and cooling system can actually account for up to 50% of all your utility bills? It’s only natural that you would want to find ways to save as much money as possible, which you’re only able to do if your air conditioner runs effectively and efficiently.

AC units that are running at peak efficiency can significantly reduce your energy costs. But your air conditioner cannot run at peak efficiency without the right kind of care and maintenance. With that being said, we’ve shared some tips below to help you prep your air conditioner before summer comes.

Change or Clean Your Air Filter

The air filter that comes with your HVAC system is designed to protect the inside components of that system from dirt, debris, and other harmful particles that may reach it. Without an effective air filter, your system can suffer and your air quality can decline.

Be sure to change or clean (if you have a reusable filter) your air filter at least once every 3 months. This should be upped to once a month if you have significant contaminants entering your home, such as cigarette smoke and pet dander.

Keep Your Outdoor Unit Clear

Be sure that your outside condenser unit is free of anything blocking the equipment, as a blockage can cause decreased air flow. Examples of blockages include plant growth, mulch, debris, and even grass clippings. Keeping an eye on this will prevent damage to your unit that can cause it to run less efficiently.

Have Fan Belts Regularly Checked and Maintained

Your air conditioner’s fan belts should be routinely adjusted and replaced when necessary. These components ensure that your air conditioning system is running at its peak efficiency, so they play an integral role in lowering your energy costs.
