Although winter is a great season that many people look forward to, it can bring a lot of inconveniences along with it. Getting into a freezing cold car in the morning, shoveling snow, and running into the problem of frozen pipes. Frozen pipes are a big inconvenience because they quickly turn into the even bigger problem of burst pipes. The good thing about frozen pipes is that they are preventable through many easy tricks.

If you come across this blog post a little too late or just have a slip-up, we understand. Just make sure to call a plumber in Sandy, UT from our professional team.

Here’s What You Can Do

Here are a few things you can do to make sure your pipes don’t freeze this winter:

Know Your Pipes: Do you know what makes a pipe “vulnerable” or where your vulnerable pipes are? If not, it’s time to get familiar with your plumbing system. Understanding what’s going on in your home is the first step to really getting a firm grasp on your plumbing system and preventing disasters. Check around your home for areas where water supply lines are located in unheated zones. Hot spots for this are in your garage, cabinets around your house, underneath your kitchen sink, and in attics, basements, or crawlspaces.

Add Insulation: After you’ve found the pipes that are vulnerable in your home, the next step is adding insulation. Many places sell pipe sleeves that you can easily slip over these vulnerable pipes to give them a little extra fortification against the chill. If you can’t imagine doing this on your own then contact a member of our team—we can make sure your pipes are protected in all the places they need to be.

Drain Water: Make sure that you take the necessary steps to prevent pipe freezing at the end of summer. Drain the water from your swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines before temperatures start to drop. We know that many homeowners put antifreeze in these lines, but we would actually advise against this unless you’re specifically instructed to do so by a service professional. Otherwise, it’s extremely harmful to the environment as well as to your pets and any surrounding wildlife.

Open Your Doors: Open those doors underneath your kitchen and bathroom sink to make sure that the warm air circulating around your home makes it to these spaces. When these doors are closed, it keeps a surprising amount of warm air out of this space. Make sure that you relocate any harsh or dangerous household chemicals out of the reach of children when you open these doors.

Drip, Drip, Drip: When we’re in the dead of winter experiencing the lowest temperature of the year, try letting a little water run out of your faucet. Even the slightest trickle will help prevent a freeze in your home. Pay special attention to the fixtures that get their water from pipes that run from outside plumbing lines.
