Should I Replace My Heat Pump?

A heat pump can last a good long time, as long as you take proper care of it. No matter how well you take care of it, though, it will not last forever. There will eventually come a point when your heat pump will break down for good. Since you don’t want that to happen at an inopportune time (like winter) it is a good idea to know the signs that you need a new heat pump. Read on for an outline of some of the signs that you need a heat pump.

Efficiency

As a heat pump gets older, the parts inside it get worn down. A heat pump near the end of its life is so worn down that it will start to experience a decline in efficiency. The more the efficiency of the system drops, the longer the system has to stay on in order to achieve the same results. This will contribute to a rise in heating bills. If your heat pump seems to be costing more and more to operate, you may need a new system.

Repairs

A heat pump shouldn’t need repairs more than once a year, if that. The same wear and tear that contributes to an efficiency loss will also eventually cause parts of the system to break down entirely. That will lead to a drastic increase in the number and severity of problems your heat pump runs into. If you have to have your heat pump repaired every few months, especially if it’s a different part that breaks every time, you likely need to replace the entire system. You will save more money doing that than repairing every single problem, anyway.
