Signs That You Have Hard Water in Your Plumbing

Hard water is an extremely common problem that occurs in plumbing systems across the United States. It is responsible for the formation of lime scale, which is a type of mineral deposit that is responsible for restricting the flow of water through pipes and reducing the efficiency of the plumbing system in general. If the lime scale isn’t caught and removed early enough, it will harden and the entire pipe will have to be replaced.

It is important that you be able to identify the signs that you have a hard water problem happening in your home, so that you can have it addressed as soon as possible. Read on for more information on how to identify hard water issues in your home.

Calcification

Lime scale is actually composed of high amounts of calcium and magnesium. It resembles a white, chalky substance that is present anywhere that is frequently exposed to amounts of hard water. That means faucets, bathtubs, and shower heads are the most common locations for this substance to appear. If you notice calcification in these areas, or any other area that is frequently exposed to water from your plumbing, you probably have a hard water problem.

Loss of Water Pressure

A drop in water pressure in your house is another common sign of lime scale buildup in the pipes. If you are experiencing a sharp loss in water pressure, it’s probably due to a leak or pipe rupture, where a steady loss of water pressure over time is more indicative of the build-up of lime scale. If you notice this happening, it is important that you call a plumber right away before the situation worsens.
