Signs You Should Replace Your Furnace This Fall

Winter is coming, and that means that it is time to get your heating system ready to keep your home warm on a daily basis. For some of us, though, now is the time to replace our old heating systems that just can’t deal with the strain anymore. Do you know if your home’s heater can last through another winter? Let’s examine some of the signs that you may need to replace your furnace.

Extreme Age

The easiest way to tell if your furnace needs replacing is to take a look at its age. Furnaces are typically manufactured to last around 20 years. Past that point, they start to develop severe issues that limit their efficiency and make operating them more expensive. If your furnace is older than 20 years, you should consider replacing it with a new one before winter.

Numerous Repairs

Normally, a furnace shouldn’t need repairs more than once every couple of years. In an older furnace, however, the added wear and tear of years of normal use causes various parts of the system to wear out. These parts will start to fail in rapid succession, causing a drastic increase in the frequency of repairs. If your furnace seems to need repairs every couple months, you should replace it.

Dropping Energy Efficiency

As the system wears out, it will have to operate for more and more time in order to hit the target temperatures. This will be reflected in your monthly heating bill, which will start to rise as the efficiency of the furnace falls. If your furnace is costing more and more to operate, it might be time to replace it.
