What to Do if Your Toilet Is Leaking

Perhaps one of the most annoying and messy plumbing problems to deal with is a leaky toilet. The good news, however, is that many times a toilet leak could be an easy fix. Below, we’ve covered some tips to follow if you do discover a toilet leak, including how to shut off the water if you need too. If you need any assistance at all, our professional plumbers are standing by.

To Shut Off Your Water

If you discover water quickly exiting your toilet, then you’ll want to shut off the water. Typically, there is a valve located right next to your toilet. On occasion, older valves fail and won’t shut off, so if this is the case you’ll need to find a main shutoff valve instead.

Check the Bolts

If you have a slow leak pooling around the bottom of the toilet, try first to dry it off completely. Then wait and see if another pool forms from the bottom of the tank. If this occurs, you may need a new wax seal at the bottom of the toilet—a task that a professional plumber will be able to assist you with.

However, the problem might be that you simply have loose bolts holding your toilet down. Try tightening the bolts one by one. Dry the area before each bolt to see if tightening them does in fact help.

Other Toilet Issues

There are a couple of other common problems that indicate it’s time to replace your toilet. When you do, you’ll need a professional plumber to handle the job. A toilet replacement is not an easy job and you can find yourself with a mess and a headache if you are unsure of what to do. So if you notice factors such as cracks in the toilet or leaks with no known source, be sure to give our trustworthy staff a call.
