Don Rentmeister was born in 1933. Like many others back then, he had a bout with rheumatic fever that left him with a lifetime of health problems. He lost his father at the young age of nineteen. After being married for just over a year, he lost his first wife mere months after she gave birth to their daughter Shelley.

The Rentmeister Family's commitment to your family’s comfort has been in practice since 1953. When he founded what would become Rentmeister Total Home Service, Don Rentmeister knew that friends and family were vital to a flourishing community. With two friends and a variety of services to provide, Don had a way to help and give back to the community he loved so dearly. 

​

After spending time working on Hill Air Force Base for a while (making an hourly wage of $1.35), Don and two friends came together to operate a company to help those in need with their most basic comforts. Despite his own storm of grief and loss, Don focused on uplifting others and helping those in need. His stick-to-it attitude is what gave Rentmeister Total Home Service its core values of honesty, integrity, and serving others.

When Don and his friends decided to split the company in 1978, he took over the heating and air conditioning side of the business; friend John Flint took plumbing, and the last of the trio: Wayne Smedley, moved and began his own business offering plumbing, heating, and electrical.  The company, known then as Rentmeister Heating and Air Conditioning, did not have an easy start. Like many local businesses, Rentmeister struggled through the first few years. From learning the ropes of entrepreneurship to nationwide economic hardship, Don navigated these challenges with help from his family and his community.

Don was always a busy man. From his position as Bishop of the Syracuse 6th Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to working on the city council, he kept finding ways to use his time to better the lives of those around him.

As Don’s health began to decline, his son Russel took it upon himself to learn everything about the company and its operations to alleviate stress from his father. His children hadn’t been as actively engaged until Russel took it upon himself to maintain the Rentmeister family legacy.  Russell spent many long nights at the office and eventually took over as General Manager in 1990. He took the initiative and made our company what it is today. 

Over the years, Rentmeister Total Home Service has gained expert plumbers and electricians in addition to our skilled HVAC technicians. The value of family friends and community remains at our heart.

After Russel’s retirement, his brothers stepped up to keep the company on course. With Ryan at the helm, Matt at his side, and a two-nephew crew of Jon and Jason, Don’s original principles guide Rentmeister Total Home Service into the future to serve the communities around them.

Rentmeister Total Home Service is a locally-owned, family-run business—three generations deep—with over fifty years of service.  Quality service and customer care are always our top priorities. Having built relationships with customers throughout Davis, Weber, Morgan, and Salt Lake Counties, we continue to grow and develop with the blossoming communities around us.
